Hi! I’m Dr. Mike! I am a Doctor of Physical Therapy and graduated PT School in 2013. I have worked with many athletes of all different ages. I've worked in various settings and know that traditional insurance-based physical therapy doesn't work: not only will insurance kick you out of therapy long before you are hiking at 100%, but the chance of you working with a physical therapist who can relate to your knee pain while hiking is slim to none.
I played competitive soccer until I was 18. Various injuries kept me from playing soccer in college. Then a few years later, my hiking career really took off and became my passion.
6 years ago, I suffered an ACL tear. I was worried, in pain, and frustrated. I thought I was going to need surgery. Through hard work, exercise, and working through hiking-specific training drills, I got to the point of no pain in my knee with running, hiking, and playing soccer! And I want to do the same for you!

My knee recovery had many ups and downs. I felt alone, frustrated, and confused with what was happening. Nobody understood what I was going through specifically. Nobody had any specific answers. And I knew that I didn't want to go under the knife.

FAQ:
Q: How often are the workouts?
A: You will get 2-3 workouts a week. Most weeks the workouts will be Monday/Wednesday/Friday, but if you want to complete them on different days, the option is yours. These workouts will be electronically sent to you. All you have to do is open your computer/phone/tablet when you want to see the workout of the day.
Q: I’m busy, how much time is this?
A: For each workout, plan to block out 15-60 minutes on the day depending on your schedule and capacity. Sometimes you will need rest breaks between exercises. And I want you to focus on your form rather than rushing through the routine. But the best part is, you get to do the workouts whenever you are free!
Q: Can’t I just find exercises online to do for free?
A: Sure! But you won’t get the same results. The exercises that you see on IG/Facebook/TikTok are there for clickbait. Most of those exercises are not going to help you hike better and decrease your knee pain. Also, those exercises that you find online do not have progressions on them to advance the exercise when it becomes too easy. But the biggest drawback is they do not take YOUR specific abilities into account. They're called "cookie cutter" exercises for a reason.
Q: Isn't $449/month kind of a lot of money for workouts?
A: When you think about how much an injury will cost you and how much time you will be out missing hiking, no! Remember, time is money.
Q: I have had lingering knee pain for years, is this still for me?
A: Absolutely! There is always hope. You just haven't been training the 4 Pillars of Tenacious Knee or being led by the right guide. You are gaining the ability to train with a physio, not just a personal trainer who took a weekend course.
Q: I've never had an injury before: is this still for me?
A: Yes, this program is for anyone who wants to hike higher mountains or be able to go on longer hikes and/or backpacking trips. By training the 4 Pillars, you will condition muscles used on all of your hikes so that potential injury is never a worry in the back of your mind on those more difficult climbs.
Q: What equipment will I need?
A: For most workouts you will be able to improvise with what is in your house. For some of the more advanced workouts, you many need bands or some weights (but I'll show you ways of doing the exercises if you do not have these items).
Q: How do I know if I'm doing the exercises correctly?
A: Each workout day, you will get videos of every exercise. Still not sure if you are doing them correctly? Film yourself and send me the video and we can check out how to fix it!
Q: Do I have to be a hiker to join Tenacious Knee?
A: No. Hiking is my passion and what I do most, so that is why it is geared towards hikers. But if you're not much of a hiker, this program will work for you to decrease your knee pain too. I can program workouts for your specific sport! We can uncover what you need on the monthly call.
